Steadfast in Prayer

Steadfast in Prayer

“But I call to God, and the LORD will save me. Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he hears my voice. He redeems my soul in safety from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me.” (Psalm 55:16-18)

Morning, evening, and at noon. At each of these times of day, the psalmist says he calls out to God and utters his complaints, and at each of these moments of calling out the psalmist is convinced that God hears. What a beautiful confidence this is! Our calls, complaints, moaning, and prayers do not go unheard. Equally beautiful is the fact that we can take any type of prayer to God. Yes, we can and should bring to him the praise and thanksgiving that is due to him, but we can also come to him with our questions, frustrations, sadness, and complaints.

If psalms like this can offer us any kind of encouragement, let it be to remain steadfast in prayer and in calling out to God because he really does hear and care. In the morning, evening, and afternoon, when you can’t quite make out the answer, when you feel that you have enemies all around, cry out to God because he is the God who hears you, saves you, and redeems your soul.
