    Thanksgiving in Hard Times

2020 has looked very different than what we expected on January 1. As we grieve all that has changed, it can be hard to remember to be thankful. The focus of the TWR Women of Hope prayer calendar for July is ‘thanksgiving’. How fitting is it for us to take this month to pause and thank God for all the ways he is working in our lives and around the world.

There is a tension in grieving what we have lost and all that has changed, but still finding our joy in Christ. While we may be tempted to dismiss the hard parts of life, the Bible teaches us the right way to lament in our struggles. There are many Psalms of lament which can guide us in sitting in the hard parts of life. But in the midst of that, we can still find our joy in Christ. The Psalms are also a great starting place for thanking God for all he has done:

“I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation.” – Psalm 118:21

“Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy.” – Psalm 107:21-22

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” – Psalm 118:1

In just these few verses, we are reminded of several reasons to thank God – he answers us and is our salvation. His love is unfailing and endures forever. He is good and his deeds towards us are wonderful. Our appropriate response is to thank him for that.

From around the world, we hear testimonies of listeners who are thankful for the hope and answers Jesus provides:

“I lost my job and have been searching for work for a long time. I feel empty, useless and discouraged. But this beautiful message on prayer during difficult times has touched me. Understanding this message is starting to bring clarity to my situation. Prayer will certainly help me overcome the trials that overwhelm me. It will give me strength and the courage to always find a solution. Thank you for all the teachings. God bless you.” – a listener from Côte d’Ivoire

“I want to thank you. Through your program, we find the strength to overcome all the trials in our lives. And thank you also to our Lord because he is so good. Last night I prayed that he would give my husband a job because he has been out of work for two weeks. Today, he was offered two jobs! God gave us so much. Thank you. I am so happy.” - a listener from the Philippines

Psalm 9:1 says “I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.” Even in the midst of hard things, God is good and we have so much for which to thank him. May we share the reasons we have to be thankful with each other and give thanks with one another to our great God for who he is and what he has done.
