Praying for Women in Western and Southern Europe and the Nordic Countries

The number of reported rapes and cases of domestic violence and workplace harassment are on the rise. Even in modern Western and Southern Europe – and in the Nordic countries, where gender equality is the standard in education and careers – many women and girls continue to experience verbal, emotional, and physical abuse at home, school and work. And many of them are speaking up and saying, “No more!”

In October 2017, actress Alyssa Milano tweeted, “If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet.” Hundreds of thousands responded the first two days. People from around the world gained courage to speak up and tell others that they, too, had been abused by bosses, leaders, co-workers and others. Finally, people were talking about sexual abuse and demanding that abusers be held accountable. Women who had been told, “No one will believe you” or “It was your fault,” realized that they were not alone. These horrible abuses happened not only to women in poverty or the forgotten refugees, but also to powerful, famous women. More women began to believe that it was no longer a shameful secret they had to keep to themselves.

Too many women living in Europe still believe no one cares about the abuse they suffer in their homes or at work in the face of threats against their jobs. Immigrants and refugees in Europe who fled persecution, war and family abuse often continue to be abused, and many are trafficked into prostitution.

Prostitution is legal in many European countries, and the largest percentage of women forced to sell their services are foreigners. Some countries have made it illegal to profit from others’ sexual services (pimping, in other words) or to pay for sex, noting that these acts are violence against women.

Pray with us that more will be done to give abused women in Europe dignity and hope for a better future.

    Please pray for …

    1. Europe’s leaders to do these things: one, improve treatment for violent men so fewer women and children will be exposed to domestic violence; and two, provide more shelters and assistance for victims of abuse.

    2. Women in Austria reaching out to refugees and immigrants even while others are upset about the effects of immigrants who don’t integrate into Austrian culture. Pray for the Sept. 20 informal summit of heads of government focusing on illegal migration and security in the European Union.

    3. Revival in the hearts and lives of people in Denmark. The country is becoming more and more secular. Pray for Christian marriages and families to be preserved in a time of great pressure from all sides.

    4. God to call someone to translate the monthly prayer calendar into Faroese, the local language of TWR Women of Hope intercessors living in the Faroe Islands. “Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field” (Matt. 9:38).

    5. Greenland officials to protect females who are subjected to sexual abuse and incest. Pray that men will respect their daughters and other women. Pray also for freedom from alcohol and hashish abuse, which is common in Greenland. “Deliver me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of evil and cruel men” (Ps. 71:4).

    6. The women in the 101 TWR Women of Hope prayer groups in Finland. Pray for them as they invite others to join the groups and for their efforts to raise funds for the support of Women of Hope programs in other countries.

    7. Women in Finland to balance their careers and family life in a way that meets their emotional, spiritual and physical needs as well as those of their children. High standards of education and technology can’t fill the void children feel when their homes don’t provide the core values and godly principles they need.

    8. TWR Women of Hope’s translator who lives in France and provides the monthly prayer requests in French for intercessors in Europe, Africa and the Americas. Pray that more women in France would pray with us.

    9. Women in Germany to hear the Hidden Treasures audio drama about God’s life-changing love. Germany has Europe’s most liberal prostitution laws. Pray for God’s protection over Christians wanting to help the women caught up in this way of life.

    10. The thousands of asylum seekers in Germany and other European countries. Most are from Muslim countries. Pray for Muslim women to learn that they are precious to God and to want to learn the truth about Jesus Christ.

    11. Single mothers in Germany who struggle with their job responsibilities and caring for their children. Pray that churches will provide guidance for mothers and a safe place for children. “Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked” (Ps. 82:3-4).

    12. Teenage girls to receive the facts about abortion and its consequences, to learn the benefits of abstinence, and to realize that God loves them and their babies. Greece reports 150,000 abortions annually, with 25 percent performed on girls younger than 16.

    13. The refugee crisis in Greece, where hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants arrived in 2015 and 2016, and over 45,000 are estimated to be stranded. Pray that the refugees will be helped physically, emotionally and spiritually.

    14. Many to be blessed and filled with hope in Jesus during Norway’s women's conference Sept. 14-16. Pray that more women will join the TWR Women of Hope prayer ministry. “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess” (Heb. 4:14).

    15. Abortion to remain illegal in Northern Ireland, resisting the push to liberalize abortion laws in all parts of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Abortion in Northern Ireland is allowed only if a woman's life or mental or physical health is at risk. Please pray for leaders to remain committed to protecting the right to life for the unborn.

    16. Women in Northern Ireland who have unplanned, unwanted pregnancies to be courageous and choose an alternative to aborting their unborn babies. Many travel to England to have an abortion. “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (Ps. 139:13-14).

    17. Women and children suffering domestic violence in Northern Ireland. With police having to respond to an incident every 18 minutes, it's believed that this is only the tip of the iceberg. Pray for organizations that help women, but also pray for better laws and stronger punishment for abusers.

    18. A new podcast series, which features testimonies of Norwegian women telling what Jesus has done in their lives, to encourage others to want to learn more about God. “‘You are the God who sees me,” for she said, ‘I have now seen the One who sees me’” (Gen. 16:13-14).

    19. Norwegian women who live under constant pressure to be successful in every way: family life, career, health, fitness and so on. Pray that they will see their value to God and that they seek to live for him and not for worldly pleasures.

    20. Wisdom and God’s direction for the TWR Women of Hope Portugal team as they assist churches and speak hope to women who are deceived by the lies of the enemy. “Asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding” (Col. 1:9b).

    21. The TWR Women of Hope team in Spain as they provide daily prayer requests on Facebook and their website. Pray for the prayer concert on Sept. 22 with Peggy Banks.

    22. God´s provision for the production of a European version of the Spanish Women of Hope program.

    23. Human traffickers to be stopped and punished. These traffickers capitalize on widespread chaos at migrant reception centers across Southern Europe to transport their victims undetected.

    24. Women from many countries attending the TWR Women of Hope Unite Europe and CAMENA Conference Sept. 25-28 to be inspired, encouraged and equipped.

    25. Children, teenagers and young adults in Sweden to discover their true identity in Christ so they may know who they are destined to be. More than twice as many children and young people suffer from mental-health problems today as did so 10 years ago. Depression and various anxieties contribute to the increase.

    26. Women and men to find the path to the International Room of Prayer in Malmö, Sweden, and receive the Lord´s love, forgiveness and hope. Malmö has over 300,000 inhabitants from 177 countries. Segregated, parallel communities have developed, becoming a breeding ground for crime and violence.

    27. The Holy Spirit to empower the body of Christ in Sweden to be a light and salt in the society. “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matt. 5:14-16).

    28. Women in Switzerland, where sex work is legal and regulated by laws, but trafficking, forcing people into prostitution and most forms of pimping are illegal.

    29. Protection for young teenagers and foreigners in the Netherlands from human traffickers, who use them in legal and illegal prostitution. Pray that people would speak up concerning the abuse that is destroying lives.

    30. Women and children in the United Kingdom experiencing gender-based violence including: domestic violence; rape and sexual abuse; forced marriage; so-called “honour”-based violence; human trafficking and modern slavery; prostitution; and female genital mutilation.
