According to the UNHCR, “by mid-2020, 80 million people were displaced worldwide as a result of conflict, persecution, human rights violations and violence.” This includes 26.3 million refugees and 45.7 million asylum-seekers. The UNHCR also reports that the number of refugees has doubled in the last decade, from 10 million in 2010 in 20.4 million at the end of 2019.
In Canada, 30,087 refugees resettled in our country in 2020, which was the highest number of any nation state worldwide. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, more refugees resettled in Canada in 2020 than in 2019, when 28,076 refugees resettled here.
As we look around our neighbourhoods, we may see that our communities are filled with people who speak a variety of languages, who come from different religious and cultural backgrounds and who have moved to Canada for a variety of reasons. We are becoming a nation of many tribes, peoples, languages and faiths.
As Christians follow Jesus’ command to love our neighbours as ourselves, we may now find new challenges in doing this. In the midst of language, cultural and religious differences, how do we share the gospel?
At TWR Canada, our ministry to women is just one of our ministries, and we have been working to create tools to help you reach to out your new neighbours. One such tool is media players for distribution in Canada.
We often view our faith as personal and private and can be hesitant to share our faith with others. However, most followers of other faiths expect that we will share our beliefs if they are important to us! TWR Canada has media players available to help you take that first step. Available in 10 of the most-spoken languages in Canada, and containing an audio New Testament and approximately 200 sermons from Thru the Bible, these devices offer an easy way to start meaningful spiritual conversations. Consider purchasing these players to give as gifts as part of outreach efforts, or to give to friends and neighbours! Visit www.twr.ca/media-players to learn more.
As we pray this month for refugees around the world, may we also remember to pray for and seek ways to reach out to the refugees who now call Canada home. May we show them the love of Christ as we get to know them!
