    Let it Be to Me

Each Christmas we celebrate the incredible gift of Jesus Christ. Yet our familiarity with the story, combined with the busyness of the season, can mean we don’t ponder the marvelous treasures it holds. Let’s take a minute to do that now. You know the story…

A young woman, Mary, is confronted by the angel Gabriel and told she is going to have a son, and her son would be the Son of God! Imagine! She is surprised, confused and anxious about this unexpected news. Yet, Scripture tells us her response is, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

Let’s pause there. Did you notice her response was one of immediate acceptance? It’s remarkable really. She was going to have a son. How could that be? She was a virgin. That alone was shocking. No doubt her thoughts also went to what people would think; society wouldn’t be very accepting about this. It would all be very much misunderstood. Yet, Mary says, “let it be…” Only a firm faith in God allowed that response.

How can we get to the place where we trust God like Mary?

We have the advantage of the Bible in its entirety, something Mary didn’t have. But she knew enough about God to trust him. Scripture is full of truths about God’s character and of his promises to us…truths that help us in the face of challenges, the unexpected or the uncertainty of life. Consider just a few.

    God is …

Sovereign   “Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. You show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’ sins into the laps of their children after them. Great and mighty God, whose name is the LORD Almighty, great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds. Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind; you reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve.” Jeremiah 32:17-19 (NIV)

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace   “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.” Isaiah 9:6-7 (NIV)

Unchanging   “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 (NIV)

Mighty in Battle  “Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.” Psalm 24:8 (NIV)

Merciful and Faithful High Priest appointed by God   “For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.” Hebrews 2:17 (NIV)

Our Refuge  “If you say, ‘The Lord is my refuge,’ and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent.” Psalm 91:9-10 (NIV)

Our Shield  “Blessed are you, Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD? He is your shield and helper and your glorious sword. Your enemies will cower before you, and you will tread on their heights.” Deuteronomy 33:29 (NIV)

Our Deliverer  “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalm 18:2 (NIV)

Our Strength  “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.” Psalm 28:7 (NIV)

Our Comforter  “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

Our Saviour  “Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Saviour, and my hope is in you all day long.” Psalm 25:5 (NIV)

Standing firm on these truths gives us the courage to say, “let it be to me according to your word.” Mediate on these; let them sink deep into your soul. Then praise our wonderful Saviour!

Is your response to the Lord the same as Mary’s response? Oh, that our hearts would be like Mary’s and eagerly respond to the Lord with the same attitude of acceptance and trust that she displayed.

Let’s make this our prayer this Christmas and into 2018: Lord, may we be quick to repeat Mary’s words, “Let it be as you say.”

May you have a blessed Christmas!
