As Christians, we are called to continually grow in Christlikeness. As we grow in faith, our desire to become like Jesus should increase. This month, as we pray for spiritual growth for women all around the world, let us not neglect our own spiritual growth. Today, let us focus on three ways in which we can become more like Christ: through God’s Word, in prayer and in worship.
In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, we read: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” As we study God’s Word, we grow in faith. As Paul states, as we read Scripture, we are taught, rebuked, corrected and trained in righteousness. In these ways, God changes us to be more like Christ, so that we can accomplish the work which he has set before us. May Psalm 119:105 be true for us: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” As we study God’s Word, would we let it take root in our lives, creating a Christlike character within us.
As we pray, our focus shifts from ourselves to Christ. That both directs our eyes to Christ, seeking him, and humbles us to the change which God produces in our lives. In 2 Chronicles 7:14, God declares “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” He promises to hear us and forgive us. When we go to God with a humble heart, we are changed.
Over and over in the Bible, we read calls to worship God. Psalm 99:5 commands us to “exalt the Lord our God and worship at his footstool; he is holy.” Isaiah 12:5 tells us to “sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world.” God’s holiness and glorious works should inspire and direct us to praise our God. As we grow in Christlikeness and declare our praise more and more, we will continue to grow in Christlikeness as we discover new things to praise God for. May we join with the prophet Isaiah and declare: “Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago” (Isaiah 25:1).
There are many ways to grow spiritually; these are just three of those ways. As you go through this month, we encourage you to seek new ways to grow, or to dig into an already practiced discipline in a new and deeper way. May we seek to be women who seek after God’s own heart and seek to become more like Christ each and every day.
