Every year, I take the month of January and spend time meditating on God’s Word, praying, connecting with a few other women, and just really digging in to see what God has to say to each of us. I think it’s real important to walk alongside each other not just to hear what God is doing in someone else’s heart, but also how God might be moving in you to help or encourage that person in genuine community.

This year, I’m working through a four week study with the Women of Hope team here in Cary, NC. When I read books like this, I don’t really pay attention to you know – Day 1, Day 2, etc. I read until something makes me pause – maybe I need to do a bit more reading or pray or just meditate on it. There’s no real structure, we’re all working through it at our own pace. So, it’s past the middle of January and I’m on week 2, but it’s all good.

One of the things I’m passionate about is teaching people how to pray. Prayer should be a conversation with God. I will read through the prayers in Scripture. This has shaped me. These prayers set down for us are models and, you know – what a great place to start! Jesus taught the people around him to pray from those models.

I love Jesus’ prayer in John 17. He’s just talking to God the father about his friends. This prayer is drawn straight from his heart and the love and compassion he had for his friends is so clear. He wanted his friends to know how much they were loved. He knew he was sending them out into the world where they would face persecution and trials – he knew what he was asking of them.
While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves…” John 17:12-13 ESV.
Protect them. Consecrate them in your truth. Let them experience the joy you have given me in doing your good work. These are the prayers Jesus offered for his friends.

Prayer is the foundation of ministry and we’re not left without instructions or examples. Don’t worry about whether your prayers are eloquent – Jesus doesn’t care. He’s listening to your heart. That’s why I’m so encouraged by the Women of Hope prayer calendar because it helps people to learn how to pray. It’s a starting place. The more comfortable you get, add to those daily prayer items as God leads you.
