"What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?" (Luke 15:4, ESV)
The Bible is full of stories that Jesus told, which we often call parables. The term parable shares the same root word as the word "parallel" and has the connotation of being "alongside." In using parables, Jesus helps us better understand a concept or principle by giving us a parallel visual reference. I resonate with this style of learning because it helps solidify the concepts in my thinking.
The parable of "The Lost Sheep," referenced in the passage above, is a powerful story of finding something that once was lost. Whether we are shepherds or not, we can all understand the concept of losing something precious to us and the joy that comes when we find it. The idea of caring enough for the one-out-of-a-hundred is a tangible visualization of the care that our Saviour has for each of us.
In missions, if only one (or two) out of one hundred people in a particular people group are Christians, we would call that an unreached people group. By that definition, right here in our own country, the French-speaking population of Quebec is an unreached people group! Sharing the truths of God's love in this secular society is an ongoing struggle. For 20 years, TWR Canada has partnered with Aujourd'hui l'Espoir to bring hope and light to this region of Canada.
Recently, we heard from a man we will call Pierre, who was searching for meaning in his life. Since childhood, Pierre had been interested in God. He tried to get to know God and approach him through different religions, spiritual experiences, and different philosophies, sects and beliefs. Eventually, Pierre found himself in front of his television where he started watching evangelical programs, including Parole Vivante produced by AE.
At the end of each program, AE offers free resources to learn more about the Christian faith. Pierre was intrigued by what he had heard and called to request the literature that was offered. After a few conversations, he was invited to meet with a pastor who is a member of our follow-up team. This pastor encouraged him to discover the person of Jesus according to the Gospel of John. As they met, Pierre had many questions about the third chapter of John, since Jesus' words state that "unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3, ESV).
Through these discussions, Pierre realized that he was a sinner and could not save himself from his sins by his own means. He came to know that only Jesus could save him. So, the pastor prayed with Pierre as he asked Jesus to save and forgive him. He was reassured about his eternity and his place with God.
This new believer then said, "Remembrance Day will be a memorable day for me because I welcomed this wonderful Saviour into my heart and life on November 11, 2021, at 11 a.m.!"
Wow! What rejoicing there must have been in heaven that day as he who once was lost was now found. Stories like this never get old for me. I am moved by the testimonies of individuals all over the world who come to know the truth of God's love for them and accept his free gift of salvation. This is why we at TWR Canada continue to do what we do every day; participating in God's divine transformation of souls brings us great joy and celebration.
Friends, I trust you relate to these stories of redemption too. Each one of you at some point was told about Jesus. You came to an understanding of who he is and what he has done for you personally. He cared enough about you – that one-in-a-hundred – that he found you and drew you to himself. Because of someone's investment in sharing the gospel, you came to know the truths of scripture.
We rely on your investment in the ministry to enable us to share the Good News with those who are lost around the world. Would you consider partnering with us financially in this mission, investing some of the resources the Lord has entrusted to you?
Continue to pray with us for this man in Quebec who has given his heart to the Lord just a few months ago. Pray that he, and others like him scattered around the globe, will continue to be rooted in scripture and strengthen their faith through discipleship. May the Lord bless you for your sacrificial investment in his work through the ministry of TWR Canada.
Together in Christ,
President, TWR Canada
