Today is International Women’s Day! It is a day to celebrate women and their contributions to the world as well as acknowledge the challenges they still face because of their gender.
There is indeed much to celebrate; however, as a friend of TWR Women of Hope, you know the challenges women still face. You know that even though women and girls make up more than half the world’s population, they disproportionately suffer the effects of violence, war, poverty, illiteracy, social upheaval and health crises. You know that cultural and religious norms can keep them oppressed and teach them they are insignificant. But that’s only part of the story.
You also know the difference the hope and healing of Christ can make. He accepts, values and gives dignity to women; he gives them an identity, an inheritance and a safe refuge.
Genesis 1:27 tells us that both men and women are created in God’s image. And as his image bearers, he shows his glory to others through us. Jesus spoke to the woman at the well, which went against culturally-accepted norms, and she went on to proclaim her freedom and bring him glory. Jesus had female friends whom he loved and spent time with in fellowship and in teaching; Mary and Martha are great examples of this. His glory was revealed in their lives when he resurrected their brother, Lazarus. And of course, Jesus entered the world through a woman. Even when she learned she was to bear the Saviour in seemingly impossible circumstances and with great controversy, Mary rejoiced and willingly became a demonstration of God’s glory.
Jesus showed that women are valuable, that they can be full participants in his kingdom and that he does reveal his glory through them. This is no different today. He invites women to inherit his kingdom and be his daughters. He invites us to share in showing his compassion and mercy to those in need. He invites us to be vessels that demonstrate his glory, through our words and deeds. What a humbling but high honour.
So, while we certainly celebrate the value and beauty of women, let’s focus on looking beyond the created to the Creator. Let’s turn our praise and celebration to the one who created us in his image, who loves us unconditionally and who reveals his glory through us. He is worthy of all praise and honour and glory!
