Where Are You Storing Up Treasures?

“I thought we had finally ‘made it.’

“We had a beautiful home, nice cars, and all the material markers of a successful Iranian family. However, we had very little savings and lots of debt. When my husband unexpectedly lost his high paying job, we had no money to fall back on. We were forced to foreclose on our home and eventually went bankrupt. Since we had to downsize and live with relatives, we gave all of our belongings to charities or friends. I was so nervous and depressed, and I was feeling that there was no more hope for me and … sometimes I thought of suicide.

“During this time I started listening to the Women of Hope program. When I trusted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour I soon learned that the material things I loved so much weren’t the most important things in life. God showed me where we had gotten “off track.” He showed me we were worshipping the false idols of success and money, and we had forgotten where our hope came from. I learned an important lesson which changed everything in my life to good:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do no break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV)
“My husband and I asked God to forgive us for our pride and greed. We wanted to give our lives completely over to him, and we wanted to truly put him first.
“Over the last three years, we have been able to rebuild our financial lives. However, this time we made a point to seek God’s will first. We learned to make better financial decisions and started prioritizing the important things. In His loving mercy, God showed me the beauty in the ashes of my life. He allowed me to see it was not the things I strived for that gave me real peace, purpose and happiness, but the relationships I had with those I loved. We learned to prioritize relationships: first with God, then with our spouse, and finally, with friends. All these things I owe Women of Hope. Thank you.” – An Iranian listener
