Seeking Refuge

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear…” - Psalm 46:1-2a
Countless circumstances cause people to seek refuge, from international upheavals like the coronavirus to personal problems like marriage difficulties or loneliness. The world provides many types of places to retreat when disaster strikes in our lives. Yet, as we continue to seek a “place” of refuge, God reminds us that he IS our refuge. We often look to relationships, therapy and books to give hope. While these things may help, only one thing will give true refuge, and that is our abiding in a relationship with the God of peace.
The number of refugees around the world is staggering. The places where they seek refuge often are treacherous, full of exploitation, abuse and poverty. How can we help when there is so much need? We can show them more than a destination to find immediate physical safety, as important as that is: We can introduce them to a relationship with Christ where, despite their circumstance, they can find secure, eternal refuge.
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'” – Psalm 92:1-2
