    Providing Spiritual Education

    In 2017, UNESCO reported that “130 million girls between the age of 6 and 17 are out of school and 15 million girls of primary-school age—half of them in sub-Saharan Africa—will never enter a classroom” (

    There are many reasons for this. Some reasons are not unique to girls, but impact girls more significantly or in higher proportions than they impact boys. UNICEF ( reports the following gender and socio-economic barriers for girls to receive education:

    • Child marriage and early pregnancy;
    • Girls are often expected to engage in domestic work and help the family;
    • The cost of school;
    • Instability due to civil unrest, war and famine;
    • Inadequate bathroom facilities; and
    • Dangerously long commutes

    And yet, in low-income countries, educating girls can mean:

    • Doubling their future income, which means they can better provide for their families;
    • Nearly eliminating child marriage and significantly reducing early pregnancy;
    • Reducing child deaths by one-fifth;
    • Reducing the risk of cholera, HIV/AIDS, malaria and other life-threatening diseases; and
    • Reducing the risk of intimate partner violence

    This month we have the opportunity to pray for girls around the world who face barriers to their education. As we pray for them, let us also remember to pray for their spiritual education, which is the most important education girls can receive. When girls hear about Christ their lives are changed forever. They receive salvation, hope and joy.

    TWR Women of Hope provides spiritual education through prayer groups and audio programs. Through listening to programs such as Women of Hope, women first and foremost receive the knowledge of who Jesus Christ is, but they also receive practical help. So, even if they lacked education in their youth, they have the opportunity to learn life-saving and life-giving practical tools and knowledge to keep their families healthy and safe.

    One listener shared from India: “The programs on health specifically draw my attention. I have learned a lot about taking care of my physical and spiritual health through this program.

    At TWR Women of Hope, while we cannot fill the gap in education for girls, we can provide a spiritual education and practical tips to help women who lack education.
