Praying For Domestic Violence In Canada

Domestic violence against women happens all over the world. Canada is not immune to this reality. Abusive words or actions that seek to emotionally, physically, or psychologically control someone often go unreported. Victims are financially dependent on their abusive partners or parents, and without money or a safe place to go, they may feel that leaving seems impossible.

Many victims believe their love will change their abusive parents or partners. Most abusers, however, are manipulative and can convince the abused ones that they, the victims, did something wrong to cause the violence. The abusers often charm their victims into forgiving them or use fear to keep them from seeking help.

Here are some startling Canadian statistics to help you pray more effectively (source here):

    •    More than 3,000 women and 2,000 children sleep in shelters because home isn’t safe on any given night across Canada.

    •    About 300 women and children are turned away from already-full shelters each night across Canada.

    •    Approximately every six days, a woman is killed in Canada by her partner or former partner.

    •    Half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16.

    •    Aboriginal women are killed at six times the rate of non-aboriginal women.

    •    70% of spousal violence is not reported to the police.

    •    Calgary police report that domestic violence has increased in the wake of Alberta’s economic downturn. Domestic violence is also more prevalent in the latter half of the Calgary Stampede and during high-stakes Stampeders games (the same is not true of high-stakes NHL games).

    •    About 26% of all women who are murdered by their spouse had already left the relationship. Half of those murdered by their spouse were killed within two months of leaving the relationship.

    •    57% of survivors of domestic violence had their pet killed by an abusive partner.

    •    It’s estimated that up to 362,000 Canadian children witness or experience family violence each year.

Please join us in praying for Canadian women facing domestic violence. Pray they would find supports to help them escape or end the abuse. Pray for those friends and family who witness or learn of the abuse, that they would be helpful supports. Pray for those who are abusing their wives, girlfriends, and children. Pray that the love of Christ would fill their hearts and change them in a dramatic and eternal way.
