Pray for Each Other with Joy!

“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

“It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:3-8

I’ve been meditating on this passage – thinking about praying with joy for my partners in the gospel, about having them in my heart and longing for them with the affection of Jesus Christ.

Paul prays with joy for his partners in the gospel because they are united in Christ. One theme in the book of Philippians is Christian unity and oneness. This unity among the members of the body of Christ flows from our unity with Christ. When we come together to pray, we are offering ourselves as well as our prayers to God. God then takes you and me and thousands of other intercessors, volunteers and staff members and unifies us in heart, mind and spirit.

As we pray through this calendar, we are partnering with our sisters and brothers in Christ and through TWR Women of Hope bringing the gospel message to the world. That is why we can pray for each other with joy – because of this unity in Christ, Paul says, “it is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart.” Our hearts need to be involved. As we pray through the prayer calendar, it is useless if we don’t have love for one another. Our hearts need to be engaged in this ministry.

But engaging hearts isn’t just about feeling good. This passage in Philippians calls us to have an attitude of thankfulness, joy, and godly affection toward our sisters and brothers in TWR Women of Hope. In other words, it’s not merely an emotion, it’s a choice. It’s a mindset. It is God’s mindset that he wants us to adopt toward one another. And it’s not forced. Paul chose to hold the Philippian church in his heart with the affection of Christ Jesus. The compassionate love that Jesus demonstrated to individuals along the dusty roads of Israel is what we are to extend to one another impartially.

As you pray, know that you are not alone. Your sisters and brothers in Christ are praying for you! So do not give in to fear, despair or hopelessness. We serve the God of all hope who proved his power by raising Jesus from the dead. Be encouraged and embrace the love of our Father and of your sisters and brothers in Christ with joy!
