As Christians, we have the privilege of speaking with our Creator through prayer. See what the author of Hebrews reminds us in Hebrews 4:14-16: “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
When we pray, we pray to the One who understands. Jesus, who came to earth and lived as a man and yet never sinned, is able to empathize with our weaknesses. He was tempted, but he did not sin. When we are tempted, he understands. He intercedes for us with God. And because of this, we are able to approach God in prayer with confidence. We can share our worries, fears, joys and excitements honestly and openly with God while trusting and knowing that he hears us and will respond in love.
Over and over again the Bible reminds us that God hears our prayers and we can approach his throne of grace with confidence:
“In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.” (Psalm 18:6)
“You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror.” (Psalm 10:17-18)
“‘Because he loves me,’ says the Lord, ‘I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honour him.’” (Psalm 91:14-15)
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.” (1 John 5:14-15)
As we spend this month focusing on prayer in our prayer calendar, approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, knowing that our Creator hears you and will answer you with mercy and grace.
