    The Power of Education

July 26, 2019 By the TWR Canada Women's Ministry Team

While significant attention and changes have been made to address the lack of education for girls, there still remains a huge need:

“130 million girls between the age of 6 and 17 are out of school and 15 million girls of
primary-school age—half of them in sub-Saharan Africa— will never enter a classroom.”
    (UNESCO, https://www.worldbank.org/en/topic/girlseducation)

Those numbers are staggering, and they can be very difficult for those of us living in Canada to understand. However, several hurdles impact a girl’s ability to attend school: the low value placed on females, poverty and the cost of education, lack of safe, private bathroom facilities, long and often dangerous commutes, and early marriages and pregnancy.

Over and over again, reports and statistics confirm that when girls and women receive an education, they are able to build better lives for them and their families and contribute to the growth of their communities.

There are many practical and beneficial reasons to educating girls, but it is also important from a spiritual perspective. As girls and women learn to read, they can read the Word of God for themselves and grow in spiritual maturity. They will learn they are created in God’s image and are of great worth and value, not second-class citizens. They will have the truth of Scripture that will help them overcome lack of self-worth, loneliness or persecution as they are oppressed. They will find joy and peace in a personal relationship with Christ, their provider, their creator and their refuge. And they will know with certainty that they have eternal hope.

This month, we have the privilege of not only praying for those unable to receive an education, but we can also pray for those who are working to give them opportunities to learn and change their future. The Lord sees each one and knows their needs. Through our prayers and the work of TWR Women of Hope, we can be part of helping them find their identity in Christ.
