Fear Not - A Christmas Message

Have you ever noticed how many times the Lord reminds us in Scripture to “fear not?” It seems to be a struggle that is at times very real for most of us. Interestingly, it’s also a theme that appears throughout the Christmas story. You can imagine how shocking and fear-filled the events of this great story are. Think about it. It’s filled with spectacular events that changed the course of history … yet many of these caused great trembling.
Remember the priest Zechariah? The angel Gabriel comes to Zechariah, telling him his wife will become pregnant. This was quite a surprise because she was barren and they were both advanced in years. Zechariah was not only shocked, he was afraid. Scripture tells us “fear fell upon him.” It came over him, covering him like a thick blanket. And the angel Gabriel has to tell Zechariah, “Do not be afraid ...” As Zechariah listens to the amazing words of the angel, he knows his life is forever changed.
Mary, the woman the Lord chooses to be Christ’s mother, also receives this message of “fear not.” When the angel Gabriel comes to her, she is a young virgin engaged to be married to the carpenter Joseph. She is greatly troubled at his greeting and tries to figure out what it means. Gabriel then says, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God….” He reminds her to not be afraid; even in this shocking turn of events, she can trust Him.
The shepherds hear this same message. They are simply going about their business of watching their sheep when suddenly the angel of the Lord appears and his glory shines around them. What a sight!! Something they’ve never seen. The sky is filled with his glory! What was this?! They too were filled with great fear.
In his compassion and understanding of the humans he created, God faithfully sends the reminder that we don’t need to fear. He is trustworthy. His promises are true. Just as he told the characters in the Christmas story to “fear not,” he gives us the same message. After all, he is the same today as he was then. Isaiah 41:10 is a perfect example: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand" (NIV). What a promise! The Lord of Lords promises to be with us. We have no reason to fear.
What is causing you fear this season? It’s the season we celebrate the hope of Jesus, and there’s no better time to look to the One who tells us over and over again that we don’t have to fear; we can choose to keep our eyes fixed on Him. Just like Mary, we can find great joy and peace as we trust him, submitting to his word and his promises. Will you trust him this Christmas? Will you choose to experience his peace and hope? And will you pray for the countless women worldwide who also need to know the great gift of Christ?
May you have a blessed and awe-filled Christmas season!  What a joy to celebrate the birth our great King!
