Every May, people preach sermons, write blogs and share about the inspiration of mothers. It’s the month we set aside a Sunday to celebrate the very special place mothers have in our hearts. It’s important to note that the term mother is bigger than our biological parent because the sad truth is that some of our birth mothers aren’t able to love us the way they are meant to. So, on this day to honour mothers, the term is much broader.
When we speak about mothers on this day, it refers to adoptive moms, stepmoms, those who hold that “mom” place in our hearts, and this list is not exhaustive. The role of mother can be held by those special women in our lives who love us unconditionally, forgive us, fight for us, influence us and rejoice with us in little and big things. As we think about this day and the words below, let’s do so this with broader scope in mind.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 is best known for a wedding passage, yet as you read it here, think about how well it applies to the love of mothers and those in that role in our lives:
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong-doing, But rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (ESV)
It is a great Scripture to represent the love of a mother. This passage shows us a love that is unconditional, authentic and persevering. It’s the kind of love that naturally pours out of mothers to their children. Think about all those times mothers sacrifice their time, energy and personal preferences for their children. Think about how they are counsellors, cheerleaders, spiritual advisors and so much more. All their actions and roles are undergirded with a deep, enduring love for their children. And this love is a wonderful demonstration of the love that the Father has for us and calls us to show others.
Sadly, many do not experience this love. At TWR Women of Hope, we are sharing Christ’s love, the perfect representation of 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. We are showing women what Godly love looks like as they hear the truths of Scripture, as they feel the love that comes from being lifted up in prayer and as they experience the love through their sisters in Christ.
Please join us in prayer as we pray for mothers — biological, spiritual or special mentors — this month. Thank you.
