Formed in the Womb for His Glory

    Devotional, Issues Women Face
Around the world this month, over 50,000 TWR Women of Hope intercessors are praying for women hurt by abortion. It’s a sensitive topic we need to approach with compassion. To help us think about this issue, we are sharing material from a TWR Canada partner ministry, Hope for the Heart. The content is based on their Biblical Counselling Key, “Abortion: Not a Choice, but a Child,” by June Hunt.

There are many and varied influences behind the decision to have an abortion. Fear…fear of parental responses, fear of rejection and ridicule, fear of financial responsibility, fear of inability to care for a child, fear of a pregnancy that resulted from rape or incest … the list goes on. Feelings…feelings that the fetus is only a mass of tissue, feelings that abortion is just another form of birth control, feeling no moral conviction because of lack of knowledge of God’s Word. These fears and feelings are very real.

Often, the underlying root cause is the belief that “abortion is a simple procedure designed to remove a mass of tissue from a woman’s body, and a woman should have the right to determine what happens to her own body.” Yet Scripture tells us that the Lord has formed us in the womb: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart,” (Jeremiah 1:5, NIV). The unborn life within a pregnant woman is a separate, unique human being, created by God at conception. A woman does have rights over her own life, but she does not have the right to destroy an innocent life.

Scripture takes a clear stand that a developing human fetus is a person:

    • The personhood of the unborn child is clearly demonstrated by John the Baptist, who "leaped for joy" while still in the womb. John's mother, Elizabeth, exclaimed to Mary, "As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy," (Luke 1:44, NIV).
    • God is actively involved at the earliest point of a person's development even before the unborn looks like a baby. The Psalmist David said to God, "Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be," (Psalm 139:16, NIV).
    • Scripture explicitly states that God not only forms the unborn child in the womb, but also has a plan for his or her future even before conception. "Before I [God] formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart," (Jeremiah 1:5, NIV).

So how do we respond in the face of this difficult issue? As Christ followers, we have a responsibility to compassionately minister to women who have had abortions or are considering having one. Often they feel emotionally distraught and wounded. They need a caring, compassionate person to help them in their time of need. Galations 6:2 (NIV) tells us to, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Let’s point them to the one who “heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3, NIV).

Everyone needs and wants hope, and this is what we have to offer in Christ. Why not offer the hope that is found in a secure relationship with him?
