An Imam's Search for Truth - Trans World Radio Canada
Media is not Cancelled!
Have you turned on the news recently and thought, this is just hopeless? COVID-19 (Coronavirus) has been the main headline for months now. Nearly every country in the world has now reported infections, and we’re seeing growing numbers of our own fellow Canadians who have contracted the disease. As I reflect on what our posture should be as we face this uncertain time, I’m reminded of Jesus’ teaching in John chapter 16. He shares with his disciples about a time coming when he won’t be with them, encouraging them by saying he will be with his Father. The chapter concludes with Jesus saying: “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (ESV)

Do we believe this? Do we have this peace in the knowledge that Jesus has overcome the world? That the hope of Jesus Christ penetrates sickness and death? We’re encouraged that God is at work and that we’re able to see God moving through the ministry of TWR Canada. One area that we continually see God at work is through media player distributions. That is, taking media players into communities where people have never heard the gospel. If you’ve been following along with our ministry, you may recall that back in 2018, TWR Canada was approached by the TWR team in East Africa to partner with them to bring media players to Bombo, a suburb of Kampala, Uganda through a local church.

The people – Nubian. The religion – Muslim. The need – Jesus Christ.

Egide, the director for TWR East Africa went to the Nubian town on December 15, 2019 with the purpose of distributing the next 50 media players with The Way of Righteousness audio program in Nubi.

TWR’s partnership with this local church is one of the only efforts by the Christian community to reach out to this people group with the hope of Christ. The players were received with enthusiasm by the recipients not only because it was the first time they heard their own language recorded, but also because the program was presented in a friendly, respectful and non-confrontational manner.

Upon his return from Uganda, Egide shared an exciting story with us. We want to take the opportunity to share this story with you.

“M, a respected Imam, was very active in spreading Islam diligently and memorized the Quran which opened up good career opportunities for him. Well-known and respected in his community, he taught in the Mosque and was a keen member of an Islamic group whose primary aim was to spread Islam among non-Muslims.

“However, the more M studied Islam, the more his eyes were opened to issues that disturbed his beliefs. He spotted contradictions in his worldview, and although he searched everywhere for answers, he was unable to satisfy his concerns. As a respected Imam, he was not meant to question his faith, so he felt unable to share his confusion with anyone.

“As part of his search for truth, M got the media player (distributed by TWR) from a friend who had previously received it from our team. As he listened to the program slowly, M's heart was stirred. ‘Surely this couldn't be true, could it?’ Despite wanting to dismiss the claims, he felt drawn to investigate. M made contact with our team and asked for a face-to-face meeting. The team met him several times and answered his many questions, yet he was still reluctant to believe in Jesus. Our team continued to pray for him. They continued to share the love and truth of God with him even though he refused to open his heart.

“Then one night everything changed. M received the unwelcome news that a close friend was seriously ill in the hospital and about to die. In distress, he fell to his knees to pray for his friend. As the new teaching he had been hearing from the media player raced in his head, he decided to take a step of faith and pray in the name of Jesus rather than Allah. The next day his friend rang from the hospital, ‘M, it's a miracle! I am much better and am being discharged home today!’ his friend told him on the phone. A stunned but relieved M contacted our team to learn more about Jesus who had the power to heal his friend.

“After listening to the “The Way of Righteousness” program in Nubian and having many questions answered by our team, M was convinced of the truth. He wept for three hours as he confessed his sin and gave his life to Jesus. M is now following Jesus and he is part of a Bible study group. He has moved to different places and given up his job as an Imam. He has started reaching out to students with the good news of Jesus. His heart now burns to share the truth of Jesus with everyone.

“Please pray for M to continue to be grounded and established in Christ and for God to use him mightily in his community.”

When Egide shared this story with us, he also extended his thanks by saying: “I take this occasion to once again thank TWR Canada and their supporters for the funds provided for these two distributions.”

We praise God for the timing of this distribution, which is now allowing families to continue to listen to biblical programs while staying in their homes. And we praise God that he called M to be his own child. As a result of the faithfulness of people like you, projects just like this are happening in the unreached and often forgotten corners of the world. We pray that God would be honoured and glorified as we continue to share the hope of Christ with men, women and children around the world.

In times like these, where we hear the reports of COVID-19 around the world, it is imperative to continue the great work of sharing the hope of Christ to all the nations. When people find peace and hope in Jesus, fear crumbles away. Will you continue to partner with us so that people like M will continue to be transformed by the renewing of their hearts and minds?

On May 5th, TWR Canada is participating in the worldwide #GivingTuesdayNow campaign that was created in response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. Your #GivingTuesdayNow contribution will allow us to continue the work that the Lord has set out for us to do! We thank you for your prayerful consideration of how you will partner with us financially to speak hope to the nations, in Jesus name!

With the hope of Christ,

Dan Reese
