Using Radio to Reach Spanish-Speaking Children

Bible Stories Alive is a series of bible stories written by Kitty Anna Griffiths (also known as Mrs. G). These stories bring the Bible to life for children in an understandable, relatable and captivating way. The stories were written in English and are available in both text and audio recording format. TWR Canada has partnered with A Visit with Mrs. G Ministries to translate the series into five languages: Arabic, Spanish, Persian, Mandarin and Swahili. We are committed to translating, producing and distributing 30 stories in each of the five languages over the next four years. By partnering with local believers, we are bringing the stories to life for children in their heart language.

One of these partners is Gisselle Serna De Romero. Born in Monterrey, Mexico, Gisselle grew up in Mexico and spent two years in Guatemala and one year in Atlanta, GA, before moving to Ontario in 2000 with her family. Gisselle worked at home and home schooled her children for many years before joining the TWR Canada team. Today she translates Mrs. G’s stories at home and records them in the TWR Canada office in London. In collaboration with technician Jeremy Mullin, she brings the stories to life for distribution throughout the Spanish-speaking world. As Gisselle works on the stories, she ensures that the content is translated accurately and in a way that will be understood easily by Spanish-speaking children. Gisselle describes what she does by saying, “My work is in translating these stories from English to Spanish, about 30 books. I make sure that the sentences are suitable for children between 5 to 10 years of age, rephrase or replace idioms when necessary and keep the stories true to Scripture. Then I read each book, recording each dramatically and with emotion, with Jeremy editing the voice and adding music and sound effects.”

During her time in Guatemala, Gisselle realized her passion for reaching the Spanish-speaking world with the gospel. She quotes Mark 16:15 as her vision: “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation” (ESV). Developing Christian radio programming for children is especially important to her as she points out that in developing countries children make up 40% of the population, yet radio programming remains almost exclusively focused on adults. She sees this gap as an opportunity to reach a new demographic through radio, and translating these bible stories for children allows her to provide children with radio programming while also speaking the hope of the gospel.

After her children started attending public school in 2016, Gisselle began to wonder how she was going to spend her time. In March 2017, an opportunity arose for Gisselle to begin working with TWR Canada. She says, “I went to the interview with my husband and, as the interview developed, something burned in my heart. I do not know how to explain it, but I think it was God telling me what his immediate plan was for me.”

Translating and facilitating the production of these stories into Spanish allows Gisselle to bring the good news and stories of the gospel to the Spanish-speaking world, and the recordings she produces are able to be used over and over for years. When asked why this is so important to her, she describes her passion for what she does by saying, “Time and effort spent in children reaps greater benefits. We share the Word, and the life in it, by modelling Christian character. It is a project that I hope will also impact adult lives as they use the material for spiritual discipleship and growth. Mrs. G dedicated her life to sow seeds in the English-speaking world, and now I have the privilege to follow that legacy and spread the seeds in other fields.”

Praise the Lord for partners like Gisselle who are able to use their love and excitement for Jesus to bring these stories to life for children and impact the lives of many around the world!
