This summer, it was the pleasure of TWR Canada to have a student work with our communications team. We asked Haley to share her thoughts on her summer with us. Meet Haley Thompson.
This summer, I was given the opportunity to do a placement as the Summer Communications Intern at TWR Canada. I am currently a student at Brescia University College, an affiliate school of Western University in London, Ontario, where I am studying Business, specializing in Non-profit Management. My program and involvement at my church have helped me realize that my passions lie in helping others in a tangible way. I am still discovering what this will look like after I finish my degree, but I firmly believe God has set working in a mission’s organization deep within my heart for a reason!
TWR Canada has provided me with such a unique and amazing experience this past summer. So, heading in to this Thanksgiving weekend, I found it appropriate to reflect on my time spent here and all the wonderful ways I have seen God’s blessing through TWR Canada.
I can remember the first couple of days I was in the office; I was overwhelmed by the relevancy of global missions. Conversation easily transitioned to work being done in all corners of the earth. Through my brief mission experience, I have seen God’s people at work outside of Canada; this has opened my eyes to the vastness of the work being done right now, every moment of every day! This was (and is) such an encouragement to me: I am very thankful for the reminder that God has the whole world in his hands.
The staff and other individuals I met and was introduced to provided an atmosphere where every day and situation was surrounded by prayer. This was something I found to be so transformational. Having a powerful, daily reminder of why you are doing what you are doing and who you are doing it for transforms the way in which you view work. Daily updates and times spent praying for and with brothers and sisters through hardships, joys and celebrations of God’s great work helped me realize even deeper the power of the global Church. I was thankful for the reminder to live every day with gospel-driven purpose and passion both during the summer and moving forward.
The most apparent example that comes to mind of God working in incredible ways this summer has been through witnessing the fundraising for the TWR Canada expansion project for the new office and ministry centre in London. Funds and donations came in such an overwhelming abundance! More of the funding was raised than I thought was possible … God is so good. He really does far more abundantly than we could think or ask. Though I finished working at the end of August, I was invited to the staff BBQ and dedication of the new building in early September. We gathered in a large, empty room together and prayed for the new building and the ministry that would be done. And we thanked God for this gift that he had given us.
Of the various projects that were given to me, one of my favourites was to catalogue years of pictures of TWR Canada’s trips to various countries and pictures taken of ministries around the world. Through these albums, I saw faces of new believers and the joy they had found in Jesus. I saw mothers and their children; I saw churches worshiping and studying the Word. I saw baptisms and Bible studies, small groups, missionaries and ministries happening worldwide. From Bangladesh to Bonaire and everywhere in between, God is transforming this planet. And I am so thankful to have even a small part in it.
So, as I reflect on this summer intern experience, I think about the many examples of God's faithfulness I have seen, more than I can detail here, and I am so thankful. I am thankful for a good God with a plan bigger than my own. I am thankful for TWR Canada and their amazing ministry, and I am so very thankful for the time I got to spend learning and being a part of their mission.
This Thanksgiving, I’d encourage you to pause and look around at what God is doing in your corner of the world and what he is doing globally. I have no doubt that you too will see his goodness, faithfulness and transforming power. We have so much to be thankful for!
