TWR Women of Hope, TWR’s ministry to women, is one that feels the impact of great despair and of great joy. As we look at the plight of women around the world, we see such suffering that at times it is hard to comprehend. We see how little girls are sold to older men in marriage. We see how widows are blamed for the death of their husbands and how their children and property are taken away. We see how young women are killed at the hands of their brothers or uncles for the shame of being raped. We see how women are abandoned and devalued.
We also see great joy! We see joy when a woman who has never been told she is loved learns she is loved unconditionally by the Creator of the universe. We see joy when a lonely woman finds friendship and acceptance in a prayer group. We see joy when a woman finds support after being abandoned. We see great joy when a woman finds her healing and hope in Jesus! Like the woman in the parable of the lost coin, we rejoice when someone is saved; and we too experience “joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents” (Luke 15:10, ESV).
God sees the suffering of his children, and he is using TWR Women of Hope to redeem their value and dignity. As we educate, encourage and equip women worldwide to pray, listen, learn, grow and give through media and small group interaction and leadership development, women’s lives are being transformed for his glory!
So, while we definitely see deep suffering, there are many good news stories. Praise the Lord with us as you read this story of a 22-year-old Turkish woman we’ll call Merve. This is her story.
“My mother got pregnant with me after she was raped. Therefore, she didn’t want me, and she gave me to an orphanage. A family adopted me, but I had a hard life. I found my real mother years later and wanted to see her, but she didn’t want to see me. I can understand her perspective since I was conceived from rape, but this hasn’t helped me to feel better.
“The family that adopted me didn’t adopt me because they wanted a daughter, but rather because they wanted someone who would serve them; I was always treated differently from the other children at home. When I turned 18, they sold me to an older man, and my life became worse. I’m still married because I don’t have any place to go.
“I know I have talked a lot about my bad life, but the real reason why I called you is that I have accepted Christ in my life, and I wanted to share that joy with someone. It has been four months now. I feel so worthy now. Thanks so much for your programs. Through them, I don’t feel alone … and I know you are my sisters in Christ, aren’t you?”
Through the ministry of TWR Women of Hope, Merve has found value and is part of a spiritual family. The Women of Hope programs speak truth and encouragement to her as she learns about Christ and his amazing gift. She no long feels alone. Let’s rejoice with Merve that she has this joy to share!
