It is with both excitement and sadness that we write you today. After just over ten years as the TWR Canada president, and over 32 years of service with TWR, Ray Alary is retiring from full-time ministry. With this announcement also comes the announcement of the new appointment of TWR Canada’s next president, Dan Reese.
Welcome Dan Reese
Dan joins TWR Canada with a background in business development as well as non-profit leadership and relationship building. After 18 years in the industrial automation and manufacturing sector, the past nine years have been spent working with non-profit organizations and churches on various capital campaigns.
Dan and Melody were married in 1990, and settled in London, ON for their first 12 years of marriage where their two children, Greg (married to Amy) and Allison were born. They have lived in the Kitchener, ON area for the past 17 years.
Dan’s father pastored for many years at Benton Street Baptist Church, in Kitchener. Having grown up in a Pastor’s home, Dan was often introduced to missionaries who were home on furlough during Sunday dinners in their home. It was then that he heard exciting stories of what God was doing around the world. It was at one of these dinners that he learned of TWR and heard some of the amazing stories of how the ministry was born and the impact that it is having.
During High School Dan developed an interest in the world of electronics. However, before attending Fanshawe College for Electronics Engineering and Technology, Dan spent a year at Word of Life Bible Institute in Schroon Lake, NY to build a strong spiritual foundation. It was at Word of Life that Dan began to take the solid spiritual grounding he received in his formative years and continued to internalize and personalize his faith.
More recently, Dan and Melody have attended Bethany Evangelical Missionary Church in Kitchener, where they served as youth leaders, small group leaders and Dan was a board member and board chair from 2010 to 2015.
Throughout their married lives, Dan and Melody have supported several of their friends as they went to various mission fields, tracking closely with them on their journeys. As their children reached the teen years, they supported their short-term mission trips, encouraging their own spiritual growth and understanding of cross-cultural ministries.
Dan is excited to join and take leadership of the TWR Canada team and shared the following: “I am most excited to take the many personal and professional experiences that the Lord has allowed me to have through my life thus far and use them to maintain and expand the ministry of TWR Canada. It is an honour to be considered for this role and I will be leaning heavily on the Lord and the great teams in the Canadian offices.”
Dan will take over as president on November 8, 2019. He looks forward to getting to know TWR Canada supporters at various events over the coming year. Please join with us as we give a warm welcome to Dan and Melody as they join the team and family of TWR Canada.
Thank you Ray and Sandy Alary
The TWR Canada board of directors would like to thank Ray and Sandy for their 32 years with TWR. Ray will remain a valued member of the TWR Canada family and continue to be an advocate for the ministry.
Ray and Sandy Alary joined TWR in 1985 with their young family as they embarked on their missionary journey. In his 32 years, Ray has served in various capacities, starting as a diesel mechanic and then program director on Bonaire. From there, he went to Swaziland (now Eswatini) where he served as station director before moving to South Africa to take on the role of operations director.
In July 2009, we welcomed Ray as president of TWR Canada, where he has led through a period of significant growth in ministry and in partnering with other organizations. He started with a team of six staff and grew the ministry to the place it is today.
Some of the highlights of Ray’s career were the installation of the first transmitter in West Africa, the creation and growth of Discipleship Essentials and the partnerships that have enabled the creation of radio home groups especially in south Asia.
Despite many hardships including the deaths of his two mentors and colleagues during the construction process, the West Africa transmitter site launched in 2008 and allows millions of people to hear the gospel in their heart language. This site is now being expanded to increase the focus on Nigeria.
Ray’s unique experience gave him an understanding of the ministry’s audience and has allowed us to create effective programming for use in many parts of the world. As a result of Discipleship Essentials, over 10,000 discipleship groups are now meeting globally on a weekly basis.
In more recent years, radio home groups have been another emphasis of Ray’s. Starting with a partnership with TWR India and Thru the Bible and now expanding into neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Ray’s many contributions and leadership would not have been possible without the encouragement and constant love of Sandy. She’s been a gift to the ministry of TWR Canada with her office visits, volunteerism and warm support to every staff member and missionary.
Again, we thank Ray and Sandy for their years of service and look forward to continuing to see them around as they continue to serve in a different capacity moving forward. If you would like to send them encouragement or greetings, you can do so by sending them to firstname.lastname@example.org or by mail to our office.
Please join with us as we wish Ray and Sandy all the best in the future as they continue to pursue Christ.
On November 8 at our London event, we will officially welcome Dan Reese and also hear about God’s faithfulness from Ray and Sandy Alary. Please visit www.twr.ca/events for more information or to RSVP.
We thank you for your ongoing prayers for the ministry of TWR Canada as we continue to bring the hope of Jesus Christ to the nations on air, online and on the ground.
Ross Campbell, Chair
On behalf of The TWR Canada Board of Directors
