On January 27 of this year, a tornado whipped through the streets of Havana, Cuba, leaving six dead and more than 190 injured. Alberto Gonzalez, the director of RTM Cuba, shared with us the aftermath of this natural disaster.
“Sadly, as it is known, a powerful tornado affected the zone of our home office. Although the building and the equipment did not suffer any damages, we had some damages in the plumbing system and the water tanks. The neighbourhood’s whole electric and phone system had to be totally rebuilt.”
As a result of the tornado, recording of the audio programs in Cuba was halted. “Actually [the power] is already working, but we have been unable to record because of the voltage instability which has made many cuts to the service that have been necessary to finish all the needed repairs in the area.”
We have since heard from Alberto that he has been able to start recording again because it seems that finally the whole system has gained stability.
Though this disaster however, Alberto reflects on the positives of their community coming together to share the hope of Christ with their neighbourhoods and city.
Nevertheless, the tornado allowed us to join with the churches of the zone to offer food, clothing and preach the Word of God to people in great need. All the evangelical churches around us provided meals to people for more than two weeks, and we contributed with our personal work and economic aid. The scene that we found at dawn on the following day after the tornado was desolate. Never in our lives had we seen something like this!”
We praise the Lord for the way the Christian community in Havana has worked together through this time. Through the continued commitment of Alberto and his team, lives are being changed and ministry continues to go forward.
The work of RTM Cuba is significant and impacts the spiritual lives of Cubans every day. We receive feedback from listeners across the island, including encouragement like this from Pastor Rodolfo, a listener of Haven Today:
"It is a pleasure to listen to you on the radio with your program El Faro de Redención. I have been a pastor for more than 30 years in this beloved island of Cuba. I am one of the Christians who lived through the difficult years, when many said that in the year 2000 there would be no Christians in Cuba. In those years, Radio Trans Mundial was a source of nutrition for our faith. What joy it is today to hear programs aimed at Cuba and with preachers, worshippers and testimonies from this beautiful island! Every night, my wife and I listen while we work in the office. Your teachings are very good. I encourage you to keep going. God bless you richly."
What a privilege we have to be able to assist RTM Cuba in continuing this work and encouraging so many across the island of Cuba. Pray for Alberto and his family, the RTM Cuba staff and residents of Cuba that as the Word of God continues to be preached, they would be encouraged and draw near to the Lord. Pray also for continued restoration for those who were affected by the tornado.
